Types of Emergencies and What You Should Do

Knocked out or Loose Teeth

If a tooth is knocked out/avulsed or made loose, it’s possible for it to be reinserted or stabilized in the dental arch. If the tooth has avulsed without touching the root, place the tooth back into its socket or in the side of your mouth. This will keep the tooth hydrated and increase the chances it can be returned to its proper place.

You may also put the tooth in a cup of saliva, milk, or water. With a hydrated and healthy tooth, patients may be able to have the tooth reinserted. If the tooth is loose, the dentist may splint the tooth to adjacent teeth to help stabilize and restore the integrity of the loose tooth. Given your dental emergency, the dentist will evaluate your mouth and the health of the tooth and provide you with the treatment options suited for your teeth.

Lost or Damaged Restorations: Crowns and Fillings

If your restoration falls out, either due to eating, decay, or trauma, it’s important to make an appointment as soon as possible to prevent further chipping, fracture, and decay. Newly exposed areas can be sensitive to temperature and pressure, which may require extensive repair involving larger restorations, crowns and/or root canal therapy.

In cases where decay has eaten away the structure supporting a restoration, more extensive work may be necessary. In the event the tooth cannot be restored the tooth may need to be extracted. Your tooth will be evaluated to determine which dental treatment that is right for your tooth.

Our Orion Dental Group dentists are here to help you relieve discomfort and restore the strength of your smile. Contact us to make your appointment.

Cracked or Damaged Teeth

If fragments are broken off teeth, try to save them for reattachment by keeping them hydrated in milk or saliva. Cracked teeth often cause extreme discomfort, which can be alleviated with pain relievers and ice. Use sensitivity toothpaste to cover sensitive areas until it’s possible to receive care. Depending on how extensive the problem is, patients may need extensive restorative work or a simple filling. Please call us as soon as possible when experiencing cracked or damaged teeth.

Ways to Prevent Emergencies

Although not all accidents are preventable, it’s possible to decrease your chances of suffering dental trauma. For active individuals, we recommend purchasing a sports mouth guard for optimal protection, or a day/night guard if you grind or clench your teeth during the day or at night. It’s also crucial to maintain good oral hygiene to prevent dental trauma due to decay, which weakens tooth structures.
